Embark on a captivating 3-day journey from Marrakech to Fes, traversing the Atlas Mountains and the enchanting Merzouga Desert. This tour is one of the most popular routes connecting two of Morocco’s imperial cities. You’ll experience the stunning landscapes of southern Morocco, from the towering peaks of the Atlas Mountains to the golden dunes of the Sahara. Along the way, explore the ancient kasbahs, enjoy the hospitality of Berber villages, and camp under the stars in the heart of the desert.
Your journey begins at 08:00 AM with a departure from Marrakech. You'll traverse the Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kasbah Ait Benhaddou. This ancient fortress has been a popular filming location for Hollywood movies. Afterward, continue to Ouarzazate, known as the "Hollywood of Africa," before heading to Dades Gorges, where you'll spend the night in a traditional hotel.
After breakfast, the adventure continues as you travel from Dades to the Erg Chebbi Sahara Desert. Along the way, visit the stunning Todra Gorges, one of the most spectacular canyons in the world. Upon reaching Merzouga, you'll ride camels into the desert to watch the sunset and spend the night in a nomad camp, enjoying traditional Berber music under the starry sky.
Rise early to witness the sunrise over the dunes, followed by a camel ride back to Merzouga. After breakfast, the journey continues to Fes. Along the way, stop at the Ziz Valley for photos, have lunch in Midelt, and pass through the Middle Atlas mountains. The tour concludes with visits to the cities of Ifrane and Azrou, known for their cedar forests, before arriving in Fes.
The best time to take this tour is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild, making for a comfortable journey through the desert and mountains. Summer can be very hot, especially in the desert, while winter nights can be cold.
We recommend packing comfortable clothing suitable for varying temperatures, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a scarf for the desert. Don't forget a camera to capture the stunning landscapes and your sense of adventure!
